The 308 million units shipped across the globe represented a 13 percent gain from the 273 million shipped in the same quarter one year earlier, largely driven by low-end 2G handsets in emerging markets and high-end 3G touch screen phones in more mature regions, the report said.

Opening Reception Tomorrow!! 6pm And Concert! 9pm

Kevin VanHentenryck, “Mary,” Limestone, 12x9x13

“Rock, Paper, Scissors” (aaaaaannnnnnnd……. MUSIC!)

Hello Friends of Windham Fine Arts!

Remember that game?? A way to solve a problem or choose a turn??Well, the title of this exhibit is a bit literal. I’ve put together in the gallery space works created in stone, on paper and with metal. In some ways, this show is as much about the choice of materials an artist makes to express his or her ideas and feelings as it is about the ideas and feelings themselves. The artists, Peter Diepenbrock, Lisbeth Firmin, Antonio Perez Melero, Kevin VanHentenryck and in her WFA debut, Kristine Corso Tolmie, have rather different things to “say” through their work. However, an obvious love of the medium chosen runs through the hands of each. The outcome of the individual works is very much subject to the malleability (metal), or inflexibility (stone), or unpredictability (paper) of the medium. Stone is ancient, made of recycled sea creatures (limestone) in the case of “Mary” pictured above. The method for releasing a form is a substractive one. A carving can last thousands of years without any particular care at all… Paper is a much more delicate matter! The ethereal prints of Kristine Corso Tolmie have a delicate movement impressed upon the paper. Fossil-like impressions embedded subtly in web-like etchings recall ancient designs. Kris has said that one of the things she enjoys about her medium is that the process of printmaking, working in reverse, and on the texture of paper, creates “surprises”. Each image is slightly unpredictable, and thus quite unique!

Kristine Dorso Tolmie, “Far and Away,” 36×36

The opening reception is tomorrow, Saturday March 13, 6-9pm. Of course, the hospitality includes a chance to meet the artists and indulge in refreshments! In my next note, I will describe the work of Diepenbrock, Perez Melero, and Firmin. In the meantime, please click on their names to see some of their work!
And there’s more! A feast for the ears and mind! FREE CONCERT following the artist reception!!
How cool is it that not one, but TWO singer / songwriter bands are popping in for the evening??!! They hail from Boston; THE ANYMEN, and MORNIN’ OLD SPORT are bringing live to the gallery some quality licks and lyrics so stick around! These young’uns are bright writers and performers and I’m very pleased they are making their way to Windham! You know I like to mix it up in this space a bit…It promises to be one swell night in the gallery!

See you tomorrow!

~Marie

JANUARY 2010

Apple Launches iPad

Magical & Revolutionary Device at an Unbelievable Price

SAN FRANCISCO—January 27, 2010—Apple® today introduced iPad, a revolutionary device for browsing the web, reading and sending email, enjoying photos, watching videos, listening to music, playing games, reading e-books and much more. iPad’s responsive high-resolution Multi-Touch™ display lets users physically interact with applications and content. iPad is just 0.5 inches thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds— thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook. iPad includes 12 new innovative apps designed especially for the iPad, and will run almost all of the over 140,000 apps in the App Store. iPad will be available in late March starting at the breakthrough price of just $499.

“iPad is our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPad creates and defines an entirely new category of devices that will connect users with their apps and content in a much more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.”

iPad features 12 next-generation Multi-Touch applications. Every app works in both portrait and landscape, automatically animating between views as the user rotates iPad in any direction. The precise Multi-Touch interface makes surfing the web on iPad an entirely new experience, dramatically more interactive and intimate than on a computer. Reading and sending email is fun and easy on iPad’s large screen and almost full-size “soft” keyboard. Import photos from a Mac®, PC or digital camera, see them organized as albums, and enjoy and share them using iPad’s elegant slideshows. Watch movies, TV shows and YouTube, all in HD or flip through pages of an e-book you downloaded from Apple’s new iBookstore while listening to your music collection.

iPad runs almost all of the over 140,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®. The iTunes® Store gives you access to the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store with a catalog of over 11 million songs, over 50,000 TV episodes and over 8,000 films including over 2,000 in stunning high definition video. Apple also announced the new iBooks app for iPad, which includes Apple’s new iBookstore, the best way to browse, buy and read books on a mobile device. The iBookstore will feature books from major and independent publishers.

Apple also introduced a new version of iWork® for iPad, the first desktop-class productivity suite designed specifically for Multi-Touch. With Pages®, Keynote® and Numbers® you can create beautifully formatted documents, stunning presentations with animations and transitions, and spreadsheets with charts, functions and formulas. The three apps will be available separately through the App Store for $9.99 each.

iPad syncs with iTunes just like the iPhone and iPod touch, using the standard Apple 30-pin to USB cable, so you can sync all of your contacts, photos, music, movies, TV shows, applications and more from your Mac or PC. All the apps and content you download on iPad from the App Store, iTunes Store and iBookstore will be automatically synced to your iTunes library the next time you connect with your computer.

iPad’s brilliant 9.7-inch, LED-backlit display features IPS technology to deliver crisp, clear images and consistent color with an ultra-wide 178 degree viewing angle. The highly precise, capacitive Multi-Touch display is amazingly accurate and responsive whether scrolling web pages or playing games. The intelligent soft keyboard pioneered on iPhone takes advantage of iPad’s larger display to offer an almost full-size soft keyboard. iPad also connects to the new iPad Keyboard Dock with a full-size traditional keyboard.

iPad is powered by A4, Apple’s next-generation system-on-a-chip. Designed by Apple, the new A4 chip provides exceptional processor and graphics performance along with long battery life of up to 10 hours.* Apple’s advanced chemistry and Adaptive Charging technology deliver up to 1,000 charge cycles without a significant decrease in battery capacity over a typical five year lifespan.**

iPad comes in two versions—one with Wi-Fi and the other with both Wi-Fi and 3G. iPad includes the latest 802.11n Wi-Fi, and the 3G versions support speeds up to 7.2 Mbps on HSDPA networks. Apple and AT&T announced breakthrough 3G pre-paid data plans for iPad with easy, on-device activation and management.

Continuing Apple’s dedication to designing and creating environmentally responsible products, each iPad enclosure is made of highly recyclable aluminum and comes standard with energy-efficient LED-backlit displays that are mercury-free and made with arsenic-free glass. iPad contains no brominated flame retardants and is completely PVC-free.

Apple today released a new Software Development Kit (SDK) for iPad, so developers can create amazing new applications designed to take advantage of iPad’s capabilities. The SDK includes a simulator that lets developers test and debug their iPad apps on a Mac, and also lets developers create Universal Applications that run on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

Pricing & Availability

iPad will be available in late March worldwide for a suggested retail price of $499 (US) for the 16GB model, $599 (US) for the 32GB model, $699 (US) for the 64GB model. The Wi-Fi + 3G models of iPad will be available in April in the US and selected countries for a suggested retail price of $629 (US) for the 16GB model, $729 (US) for the 32GB model and $829 (US) for the 64GB model. iPad will be sold in the US through the Apple Store® (

Technology Fans Swarm Las Vegas, CES; Steve Ballmer to Keynote

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will give the keynote speech at the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show later today. But first, hundreds of construction workers rush to finish building more than 2,500 exhibits, including one for Microsoft.

LAS VEGAS – Jan. 6, 2010 – Some 110,000 gadget-lovers are descending on this city for the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) – the world’s largest consumer electronics trade show.

The four-day show officially kicks off tonight, when Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer takes the stage at the Las Vegas Hilton to deliver his keynote speech. Last year, Ballmer assumed the role from Bill Gates, who had traditionally opened the show.

Last year’s show was beset with gloom as the U.S. economy seemed to be in free-fall. Attendees this year can take heart that the just-finished holiday shopping season saw surprisingly strong numbers.

Revenue from U.S. electronics sales between November 1 and December 24 rose 5.9 percent over the same period in 2008, estimates MasterCard Advisors’ SpendingPulse, which tracks all forms of payment. CES-bound manufacturers hope consumers extend their holiday shopping season into the new year and buy some of the toys on display at the show, including TVs with 3-D displays, wafer-thin laptops, and a new generation of e-book readers.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

HOLIDAY SALES AND FORECAST, i-STAGE AND SIR KEN ROBINSON ROUND OUT DAY ONE AT CEA’S 2009 INDUSTRY FORUM

Consumer CE Holiday Spending to Increase; Regen Takes Home Top i-Stage Honors

Phoenix, AZ., October 20, 2009 – The definitive CE holiday sales forecast, the second annual i-Stage competition and a luncheon keynote by Sir Ken Robinson, acclaimed innovator and author, were among the hot happenings on Day One of the 2009 Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® Industry Forum. Designed to connect, educate and inform consumer technology professionals, CEA’s 2009 Industry Forum runs through Wednesday, October 21 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Shawn DuBravac, CEA’s chief economist and director of research and Steve Koenig, CEA’s director of industry analysis, kicked off the Industry Forum’s programming with the popular Holiday Sales and Forecast presentation. DuBravac began with an economic overview and outlook, noting that despite a difficult year there are signs of optimism for the holidays.

Koenig announced CEA’s research finding that consumers plan to spend more on consumer electronics this holiday season as technology plays a main role in holiday gift budgets. CEA found that consumers plan to spend an average of $222 on CE this holiday, a gain of eight percent over last year. The 16th Annual CE Holiday Purchase Patterns study tracks CE devices consumers intend to give as gifts, as well as those they hope to receive. Consumer electronics comprise four of the top 10 items on adults’ holiday gift wish list, with computers and video games ranking two and three respectively, behind clothing.

“There are signs of optimism in our holiday forecast,” said DuBravac. “As the holiday approaches, consumer appetite for technology highlights the resiliency of the tech sector.”

Immediately following the Holiday Sales and Forecast presentation, CEA launched its second annual i-Stage competition where eleven finalists unveiled their products before a live audience and expert judges. Regen, the light powered personal and home electronics company, took the top prize for its ReNu personal solar power generation and storage system. Central to the ReNu system is the ReNu panel, a freestanding power module containing solar cells, a rechargeable battery and an intelligent user interface. The panel can be hung or placed in direct light to capture energy. When replenished by sunlight, a user can drop a ReNu panel into one of a series of Regen extensions to utilize the energy they have created.

As the winner, Regen will receive $40,000 dollars, a turn-key exhibit at the 2010 International CES®, the world’s largest consumer technology tradeshow and the option of a booth at CES Unveiled in New York or Las Vegas. Regen was also chosen by the audience as the Fan Favorite and took home a bonus $2,500.

In addition, EnTourage Systems, Inc. placed second in the competition with its eDGe™ product and was awarded $7,500, as well as the option of a booth at CES Unveiled in New York or Las Vegas. The enTourage eDGe is the world’s first dualbook, combining the functions of an e-reader, netbook, notepad, and audio/video recorder and player in one.

Sir Ken Robinson, acclaimed innovator and author of the book The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything, addressed attendees during a luncheon keynote Monday afternoon. Robinson began by stating that imagination is the only thing that sets us apart and that we spend most of our lives suppressing it. He went on to tell the crowded room that in order to achieve success both professionally and personally that we cannot be afraid of making mistakes and must embrace the unknown of our imagination in the search of innovation. “We must make innovation a habit, not an accident and to do that we need to challenge the things we take for granted.”

Sir Ken Robinson, PhD is an internationally recognized leader in the development of creativity, innovation and human resources. He works with governments in Europe, Asia and the USA, with international agencies, Fortune 500 companies and some of the world’s leading cultural organizations.

Highlights for Tuesday’s Industry Forum will include: Economic Outlook-The Economy in CE Terms, CEA’s Annual Meeting and Luncheon Keynote with Jen-Hsun Huang, co-founder, president and CEO, NVIDIA Corporation and The CE Hall of Fame Dinner where new inductees will be honored for their historic contributions to the consumer electronics industry. A full list of inductees can be found here.

CEA’S INDUSTRY FORUM DELIVERS ECONOMIC ANALYSIS, RETAIL STRATEGY, GREEN TRENDS AND INDUSTRY ADVICE

Focus on CE Retail, 3-D and Green Technology, Social Media and Business Strategies

Phoenix, AZ., October 21, 2009 – The current and future state of CE retail, breakthrough technology innovation and social media trends were among the hot technology topics discussed on day two of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® Industry Forum. Designed to connect, educate and inform consumer technology professionals, CEA’s 2009 Industry Forum wraps up today in Phoenix, Arizona with sessions presented by CEA’s Small Business Council.

CEA president and CEO Gary Shapiro opened Tuesday’s annual member meeting luncheon with a recap of CEA’s achievements throughout 2009. He outlined recent CEA market research, industry standards, policy initiatives, the launch of the Innovation Movement, the upcoming Greener Gadgets and CEA Line Shows in New York City and highlights of the 2010 International CES this January.

He then welcomed to the stage Jen-Hsun Huang, co-founder, president and CEO of NVIDIA, who described his company’s transformation over the past 15 years into the world leader in programmable graphics processing technologies and one of the semiconductor industry’s largest fabless companies. Huang described the evolution of consumer technology over the past several decades and concluded that the Internet is today’s killer application and that the next generation of innovation will bring the fidelity of the Web to consumers in increasingly convenient ways. Huang demonstrated NVIDIA’s augmented reality technology and described the benefits it delivers to a variety of industries.

The conference session Charting the Churning Waters of CE Retail: Understanding How Changes in Channel Dynamics Affect the Industry featured CEA’s Steve Koenig and TraQline’s Eric Voyer outlining consumers’ quest for value and the CE industry’s need to determine what value means to their customers and then deliver it. Price deflation is rampant as the industry faces maturing markets. The presenters noted that discounters and online retailers are gaining market share. Koenig and Voyer discussed how the industry must safeguard innovation to help grow opportunities.

Another morning session, Economic Outlook: The Economy in CE Terms was moderated by CEA’s Chief Economist Shawn DuBravac and included presentations from Dr. Tom Davis, corporate vice president, finance operations, Motorola and David Prince, economist, Intel Corp. The economists agreed that there is a global economic recovery happening. Prince said, “We anticipate three to five percent growth next year but it will take three years to get back to where we were.” Davis said, “Due to the fiscal stimulus, we will see an impact in 2010.”

DuBravac asked what the greatest risks are for next year. Davis answered, “The dollar going south is the thing I worry about – it is a key issue for me.” However, Prince said he didn’t believe inflation would be a major concern in the short turn until unemployment has dropped. “GDP [growth] will have to be two to three percent.” Both economists were upbeat about the future. Davis said, “It is time to plan for the upturn.”

Windows 7 Is here.

We like the feel and speed of the Windows 7 operating system!

There are so many new PCs’ and Apples too to choose from.

Netbooks may well go away. How about a smart phone that connects to a Led display to do both phone and internet stuff with a light, flexible, lighted keyboard to do the job?

Oh well lets see what this holiday season brings as we enter the lost leader marathon shopping maze.

Check out Yurbuds Earbud Enhancers. Having worn them for many hours with little fatigue , we like them. They even have a way for you to get a perfect fit. www.Yurbuds.com

HOLIDAY SALES AND FORECAST, i-STAGE AND SIR KEN ROBINSON ROUND OUT DAY ONE AT CEA’S 2009 INDUSTRY FORUM

Consumer CE Holiday Spending to Increase; Regen Takes Home Top i-Stage Honors

Today is the birthday of Sathya Sai Baba, the most remarkable spiritual teacher I have ever met. He has opened my heart in countless ways. A joy beam of love, light, wisdom and power in balance! A gift for us all. If you want to check out the technology of a spiritual quest check him out! No batteries required. So, if so inclined some places to visit: h2hsai.org, radiosai.org, sathyasai.org, saicast.org So watch and enjoy.

Granny Annies Childerns’ Digital Toy suggestions for 2009

We recommend Visit: www.drtoys.com

January 23, 2009
I was very fortunate to cover the CES show in Las Vegas which was from Jan6 -11.. My focus was on kids and seniors, since I am involved with both .
There was a whole day involving senior advances in technology and a whole day about kids called,“Kids At Play, Building a smarter world.”

Lets start with kids. My interest because I have 6 grandchildren ranging from 4 to 2. Five grandsons and one granddaughter,,,, What fun they are and I want to keep them safe on the net and happy and well educated, One of the fun things I found out about was KidZui,the internet for kids. My children did not know about this website…It’s for children from 3-12 and you don’t have to worry about anything inappropriate on there. Just go on line, where there is a free download, and then all your kids have is lots of fun and the parents have no worries….It’s a game and teaching channel, and your kids will not be bored, You can always look in to see what there up to and check their progress..

Another kids site is PBS Kids play, run on broadband. They have Thomas and friends 3-6. Three levels of play and you can track the child’s progress. Bob the Builder, green building dealing with safety issues. Curious George, about water displacement, density, weight and a lot of scientific concepts. Also, about how virtual veggies grow…

Digital Blue, is another interactive electronics creative play…There’s a night vision digital video camera, a U’turn digital camera, lego-mp3 boom boxes, cameras, media players that are made with Lego’s..

Another website is Jump Start, 3Dvirtual world for kids. Kidthing is another website with places like Senario,Elf Island-virtual world for kids 8-12. What they play.com Nature of content of what kids are playing, Then there’s Cartoon Network.com where you can create new games and places.

All in all it was a very enjoyable and informative time for me and I am glad that my grandchildren have a lot of safe places to go to on the net and are free to learn and enjoy and enhance their lives.

Granny Annie Toy Tips;

Leapster.2 seems to be one of the hottest learning electronic toys on the market.
It’s a hand held toy-a learning tool- with inserted cartridges with games and learning lessons.
Fisher-Price Fun-2-Learn Computer Cool School- is also favored by kids and highly rated by adults. What a wonderful way to learn. Insert different CD’s into different world’s. Diego, Dora, music, science, art. Whatever the child is interested in.
The hottest electronic toy is Wii | Nintendo Console + Wii Sports , It is for the whole family, adults and kids. With all kinds of games and learning tools it plugs into your computer or big screen TV. Everyone can play together and have so much fun.
All these toys make learning easy and fun and keep the kids busy and happy learning. Sometimes they even forget to talk to their Granny.

Photos grab moment.

Videos/movies tell stories.

The challenge is to figure out which one the market will want (or get) in the next 3, 5, 10 years.

That sorta sums up the annual information-rich 6Sight Conference in Monterey, CA.

Today, nearly every camera shoots video and every camcorder shoots video.

The two devices coexist in the consumer market. In the professional and prosumer markets there are clear distinctions.

Paul Worthington, moderator and FutureImage analyst, set the stage by noting that video is the most powerful communications tool available. Anyone can access the tools to capture, view, distribute high quality video.

He said good VGA content can be captured with cameras, camcorders and even camphones but few people do anything more than file it…somewhere.

Tanguy Leborgne, VP of worldwide marketing for Pinnacle, made a distinction between photos and videos.

“Photos capture a moment, videos tell a story – HD on the TV screen or VGA on YouTube,” he noted.

People want to tell their story,” he continued, “but non-professionals don’t have the training or self-discipline to think through, begin and end the story.”

He noted it’s not a daunting task but the thought and flow functions are foreign to average users.

“Our task as hardware and software providers is to help them break hurdles and help them produce really interesting videos,” he added. “They may never produce a Hollywood spectacular but at least they will be movies for their family, their church, their school, their neighbors that they can be proud of. When they do that…we make the world a more beautiful place.”

During the dinner reception at the Monterey Aquarium, Alexis Gerard (founder of Future Image) noted that the content industry is growing in both depth and breadth.

“There are some outstanding solutions being introduced for professional and prosumer photographers and videographers,” he commented. “But the real excitement is the rapid improvement of and merging of imaging and communications technologies that is being put into use by normal people around the globe.

“Photos and videos are really the universal language that make ideas and things easy to understand no matter where you work, live or relax,” he added.

All of the complexities have been eliminated so they don’t have to worry about video capture cards, going into the operating system, or even opening the computer case.

Instantly recognized when connected to a PC USB port, the external Dazzle device can transfer video and audio signals from any analog source such as VHS tapes, analog camcorders, set-top boxes or VCRs using the RCA (Composite) or S-Video video inputs.

Once connected, Pinnacle Instant DVD Recorder software enables users to easily make an exact copy of the source video directly to a DVD. The software automatically adds DVD menus and chapter points for simple navigation. With the ability to record videos directly to DVD without copying to a hard drive, users don’t have to wait while video files are first stored on their hard drive and there are no extra files to manage or delete.

DVD, the most widely used standard for delivering digital video, offers a number of key advantages over VHS, a technology that is quickly becoming obsolete:

* VHS tapes degrade with each use, DVDs don’t.

* VHS quality degrades in about 10 to 15 years, even if the tapes are not played. DVD image and sound quality can last for decades.

* DVDs can be played on most DVD players–they can be enjoyed at home on a large-screen TV or when traveling on a laptop.

* In addition, since most people are replacing their VCRs with DVD players, a DVD is easier to share with friends and family.

“Beginners like Dazzle DVD Recorder because they aren’t intimidated by it,” said Tanguy Leborgne, Pinnacle Systems Vice President of Worldwide Marketing. “The software guides them from start to finish. And,” he added, “at less than $50, it quickly pays for itself with just a few conversions.”

Pricing and Availability
Pinnacle Systems Dazzle DVD Recorder can be used with Windows XP (SP 2 or higher) or Windows Vista (32-bit) systems. Available through leading retailers, online resellers and the Pinnacle Systems estore, Dazzle DVD Recorder has a suggested retail price of US$49.99.

For consumers who also want to edit their videos and share them on portable devices and on the Internet, Pinnacle Systems offers Dazzle Video Creator Plus. In addition to the Pinnacle Instant DVD Recorder software, Dazzle Video Creator Plus includes the award-winning Pinnacle Studio™ video editing software with its exclusive Pinnacle Montage feature, the ability to export to Apple® iPods®, Sony® PSPs® and direct upload to YouTube™.

Thoughts before buying that new Digital Gadgets, software product or services!

Rebates, sales, specials, refurbished, closeouts, lost leaders promotions; real or hype?

Thoughts before you buy that new must have?

Whenever you consider a purchase of tech stuff it is good to Ask Yourself the following?

How will this gadget, software, hard ware add to my, our, quality of life.

Is this a necessary choice or just a passing impulse purchase?

What is the cost, in money, time, to purchase, to install, to maintain to replace this purchase?

Notice how there is always upgrades to software and services.

Who has owned it or reliably reviewed it and what their takes on the product or service?

What are the warranties or return policies?

What are the emotions that are prompting this acquisition?

Yes there is a hidden cost of ownership beyond the purchase price.

Rebates are baites to promote sales. Hey are we likely to send in the rebate in time with all the requirements or do we usually just forget to follow thru?

If we do the stuff required to get the rebaites great if not don’t count on it as a savings?

Most people don’t follow through so ask yourself if this is a real saving or just sale baite?

So ask yourself? And listen!
